Chapter Eight

Uriah almost laughed until he realized Kit was neither exaggerating nor being melodramatic. Whether true or not, he clearly believed that if he stayed, something terrible would happen.

“You’re not going anywhere.” He brushed his thumbs against Kit’s cheeks, encouraging him to open his eyes. “Whatever is going on, we’ll figure it out, but you’re not leaving.”

Kit’s long lashes fluttered, and after several tense seconds, he sniffled audibly and opened his eyes. “You don’t understand.”

“You’re right, I don’t.” A problem easily remedied. “We’re going to go make a pot of coffee. Then, we’re going to sit down in the living room, and you’re going to tell me everything.” Calm. Confident. Completely in control. Nothing for Kit to worry about or guess at. “Do you still want to change first?”

When his mate tensed and began chewing his bottom lip, Uriah made the decision for him. Releasing Kit’s face, he reached for the zipper of his ridiculous coat. While the garment appeared to be in decent condition, it completely swallowed his small frame.

“Let’s get you into something clean and warm,” he suggested, sliding the jacket off Kit and draping it over the crook of his elbow. “Do you have something to wear?”

“I…uh…” Kit blinked a couple of times, then looked over his shoulder at the threadbare duffle bags on the floor of the bedroom. “Yes.” He jerked his head in what might have been a nod. “In there.”

Though reluctant to leave him alone, Uriah gave him a gentle push into the bedroom, then backed away. “Get dressed, then come to the living room.”

“I can do that.” It seemed to be more of a rallying cry to himself than an acknowledgment of understanding.

Nevertheless, he shuffled into the room and lifted one of the bags onto the bed, so he could probably manage on his own for a few minutes. Taking the stained coat with him to the kitchen, Uriah briefly paused beside the trashcan, wondering how pissed Kit would be if he disposed of the awful thing. After a few seconds of back and forth with himself, he sighed and carried it to the row of hooks on the wall beside the door that led to the carport.

For now, he didn’t have the right to make those kinds of decisions, even if his intentions were noble. That didn’t mean he couldn’t replace it at the first available opportunity. Surely, Kit wouldn’t refuse a gift.

Uriah snorted. Who was he kidding? The guy had been sleeping in his car, freezing his ass off every night, and he’d practically had to force Kit to accept his help. He’d never met someone so obstinately independent in his life.

And he was related to Skye Maddock.

After hanging up the coat, he returned to the kitchen to start the pot of coffee he’d promised. Kit probably needed a good night’s sleep a lot more than he needed caffeine, especially since the digital display on the microwave showed just after nine o’clock. Too bad for him, Uriah had already decided that neither of them would be getting any sleep until he’d figured out what had his mate so spooked.
